Car, bus or taxi whilst on holiday

When planning a holiday, one of the decisions that often gets neglected, or left to the last minute, is what type of transport you need. Choosing the wrong option, or making no choice at all, can leave you stranded, unable to get to the places and see or do the things you planned on, or paying over the odds when you needn't have.

A holiday car is a good option if you plan to go to a lot of niche locations outside the town or city you're visiting. If you're going to a large settlement, or a popular destination, finding a hire company shouldn't be a problem, and you can often make big savings if you book car hire online before you go. For journeys at night, it is advisable to take a taxi. Obviously, if you plan to drink, you will be unable to drive - and also remember that drunken friends don't make good passengers in a hire car - much better in a taxi!

Many people are put off from using public transport in their country of choice, as it can be daunting to use a system where maps and directions might be in another language, and where you are likely to be travelling with mostly locals, rather than fellow holiday makers. Whilst unsuitable for spur of the moment 'exploring', planning your way to a destination using local buses, or even trains and trams, can often be a very cost effective way of getting around on your trip. You can usually find information in English if you look hard enough, and, if planning ahead, you should be able to find someone to advise you as to the best way to get to where you want to be.
